Daily Mail Foursomes

Congratulations to ALCGA member Catherine Garrett (West Kilbride) and her partner Helen Cattanach on their recent achievement in the Daily Mail Foursomes.

They reached the semi-finals of the event before losing to Janice Bridgeman and Fiona Lawless from Grangemouth.  A great run in the event and well done for getting as far as the semi-finals.

Pictured below are Catherine and Helen with their prizes

McCall Salver Final

Sandra Shackleton (Irvine GC) and Margaret Morrison (Troon Ladies) contested the final of the McCall Salver today at Loudoun Gowf Club.  The weather behaved, it was very pleasant out and stayed dry.

The final was a very friendly match and produced a close front 9 with Margaret edging ahead by one hole as they made the turn.

Margaret then moved to 3 up after winning the 11th and 12th.  Sandra staged a comeback by then winning 13 and 14 but a 3 putt on 15 gave Margaret a 2 hole advantage with 3 holes to play.

Sandra won 16 and it looked like that match may go all the way down 18 but Margaret won the 17th to win the match overall by 2&1

Many thanks to Loudoun Gowf Club for the courtesy of the course and to Captain, Liz Keohone for refereeing the match.

9 girls competed for the St. Nicholas Trophy yesterday at Barassie Links.   Playing conditions were exceptionally difficult with cross wind speeds of 40+.   However, this did not deter Alison Malcolm (Prestwick St. Cuthbert) who had an excellent round of golf.  Her nett 78 (SSS 76) won by 6 shots over West Kilbride's Claire McLaughlin.

Junior girls County friendly

Pictured above are the girls who took part in a Friendly Match between Dumbartonshire & Argyll and Ayrshire.   Played at Milngavie on a beautiful sunny afternoon, the girls all enjoyed their games and the opportunity to meet new friends.   Julia Thomson (D & A) beat Rebecca Hale (Ayrshire) 5/4, Freya Russell (Ayrshire) beat Sophie Murphy (D & A) 4/3, Zara Mason (Ayrshire) halved with Cristina McCracken (Ayrshire on loan to D & A!) so a very friendly halved match.   Thanks go to Milngavie for their hospitality.

Home Internationals Day 1

Down in Wales the young guns have got off to a fantastic start, with the girls team posting a convincing 7-2 win in the first day of play over Wales. With our Ayrshire girls bringing home 3 points!

The women's team unfortunately did not have the same success on day one suffering a 2.5-6.5 defeat to their Welsh counterparts.

Both the women's and girls England and Ireland teams ended their days on draws (4.5-4.5)

Today our girls will face England, Good Luck!! 🍀⛳

3 Ayrshire team players picked for Scotland

Connie Jaffrey is once again selected to represent Scotland at Ladies level in the Home Internationals at Conwy in Wales next week.   For the first time the L.G.U. are staging the Ladies and Girls Internationals at the same time over the same venue.   Hazel MacGarvie, recent winner of the Scottish Girls' Championship, and Louise Duncan have both been selected for the Girls' team.

Best Wishes Connie, Hazel and Louise, from all your Ayrshire buddies!

West Kilbride Girls Open

Hello Juniors! It's that time of the year again, and West Kilbride Golf Club will be holding their junior girls open on the 20th of August.

It's a fantastic course and a good test of your golfing skills with prizes available and if nothing else it will be great fun!! It's a open for those with a handicap and pre-handicappers so everyone's welcome!

So if your available please CLICK HERE for the entry form and send off to Linzi, we would love to see as many of you girls there as we can!!

Ayrshire Teenagers Tee Up with the Professionals!

Connie Jaffrey (19) and Rachel Foster (13) were invited to play in the two day Pro-Am event of the Ladies Scottish Open at Dundonald.  Connie was playing alongside Connie Chen from South Africa who scored 78 and 77 not good enough to make the cut - their team score was -9.   Rachel's professional partner was Alex Peters from England who had two rounds of 73 against a par of 72.   Their Team score after the two days was -14 which included 4 birdies from Rachel on Saturday giving them a top 10 finish!  Well done Rachel, I'm sure the professional ladies would be impressed!

Hazel is Scottish Girls' Champion!!

Hazel MacGarvie (Troon Ladies) won the Scottish Girls' Championship at Baberton today after beating Jillian Farrell (Cardross) with an eagle 2 at the first play-off hole after they finished tied on 3 under par 71.   The Championship format had to be changed due to flooding after the two rounds of stroke-play qualifying on Tuesday, so instead of matchplay from there, it was decided on one round of strokeplay today.   Hazel's two 72's had left her tied first after the qualifying but this counted for nothing so it all came down to the round today.   Excellent scoring Hazel, and holding your nerve in the play-off to have an eagle!   Awesome!   Many congratulations from all of us in Ayrshire.   Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) had a 76 today for a top 10 finish.   Well done Louise.

West Inter Divisional County Matches 2016

Well Ladies, after three days of fantastic play, we as a team cannot thank our caddies, supporters and well wishers enough. Without you guys behind us that 12th hole would have defeated us long ago!

For those who couldn't make it, let me fill you in. On the first day Ayrshire were narrowly defeated 5-4 by Lanarkshire, with all our matches being very close, most coming down to the last few holes.

Day two had us battling it out against Dumbarton and Argyll. Again the girls played fantastic, and were just pipped at the post. The end result doesn't show how close the matches were however D&A came out on top with a 6.5-2.5 win.

Ayrshire redeemed themselves on the final day by beating Renfrewshire. After gaining out first foursomes point in the morning, the team went out all guns blazing in the afternoon to secure a 5.5-3.5 win allowing us to just sneak into third place ahead of Lanarkshire.

The final over all results were:

1st. D&A (2 wins, 1 loss. 16pts)
2nd. Renfrewshire (2 wins, 1 loss. 14.5pts)
3rd. Ayrshire (1 win, 2 losses. 12pts)
4th. Lanarkshire (1 win, 2 losses. 11pts)

Well done team for a fantastic 3 days. And a most importantly thank you Captain Liz, you had a tough first year, but never stopped believing we could get that win.

Scottish Ladies 2016

Connie carded another 69 today to finish 1 stroke behind Jess Meek who had a 6 under par round to lead the qualifiers on 137.

Louise Duncan playing in this event for the first time, had a splendid 72 and is tied 12th for the matchplay tomorrow.

Emma Hale was one better today with 74 and Lorna Ronnie also improved on her 1st round with a 77 today.

Unfortunately Connie and Lorna meet in the first round of the matchplay tomorrow (10.30 a.m.) but this should be a great match to watch so why not come along and support both Ayrshire players.

After a splendid 78 today, young Rachel Foster qualified tied 8th (161) for the next flight of 16 who compete in the Clark Rosebowl. Rachel plays former Scottish Girls' Champion Lesley Atkins who was 167 after the two days.

W.K.'s Catherine Garrett, with Nancy Chisholm on the bag, had 83 to add to her 80 and Catherine plays M. Gardner tomorrow who was 162.

Claire McLaughlin played to her handicap today recording an 87.   Alex Glennie added another 82 but is unavailable to play in the Clark Rosebowl.

The Ayrshire Ladies County Golf Association team recorded a second successive victory over the Ayrshire Golf Association team when the annual match for the Innes McQueen Trophy was contested at Loudoun Gowf Club on Sunday 8th May.

In the final tie on the course, Elliot Spence and Sean Addie prevented a whitewash, winning by one hole against Katy Hiill and Rachel Foster, to give a final match score of 3 - 1 in favour of the Ayrshire Ladies County Golf Association team.

Ayrshire Vice President John Rushbury, paired with Executive member John Watt, took some comfort in their 2 & 1 win in the non counting tie between county officials, against ladies captain Liz Keohone and Secretary Ann Wallace.

What lovely weather we had for our foursomes today, the Club were most apologetic for the delays with the catering, I think they were a bit busier than anticipated!  I certainly enjoyed my lunch and I think, for a small club, they looked after us well and it was good to be able to give them some business.

Katie Ronnie (Barassie) and Susie Walsh (Troon Ladies) played 9 holes from forward tees in the Pre-handicap competition.   Both girls played very nicely and have a very good 'feel' for the chipping shots and putting.   Keep it up girls, you were a joy to be with!

Hazel tied 21 in Helen Holm

16 year old Hazel MacGarvie (Troon Ladies) finished a very commendable T21st in the prestigious Helen Holm  tournament this weekend.   After a slightly disappointing 78 over Portland on Friday, Hazel improved on that on Saturday with a 75 that included an albatross!!   On the par 5 12th hole, Hazel holed her 2nd shot........a 5 iron from 210 yards! .......a mighty blow despite being downwind.   Of the 5 birdies Hazel recorded in the competition, four of them came today over Royal Troon, at the 4th, 6th, 12th and 16th giving her a splendid round of 76 today, overall total 229.   Olivia Winning was the tournament winner on 217.

2016 Championship Final

Past Champion Alex Glennie, Barassie, was beaten in the semi final this morning by Lorna Ronnie, also Barassie (6&5). Lorna, past champion at Strathven and former Lanarkshire team player moved to Ayrshire 5 years ago and recently joined Ayrshire Ladies. Lorna was also a past West of Scotland girls champion (1986) and played for Stirling University team.

In the final she will play top qualifier Emma Hale, Troon Ladies, who beat Louise Duncan, West Kilbride (2&1). It was a closely fought match with both girls making birdies. Emma went one up at the 13th followed by halves on 14th, 15th and 16th, before winning the 17th.

In the final, Lorna did not quite reproduce her morning form, but remained in contention well into the latter stages of the match.

The finalists with
Prestwick Captain Dr. Paul Stevens
and ALCGA Captain Liz Keohone
With Emma two holes up, the pivotal hole proved to be the thirteenth where it looked like Lorna would have a chance to reduce the deficit to one after Emma found the famous fairway bunker, ' Willie Campbell's Grave', that lies between the thirteenth and sixteenth, from the tee. Despite this setback however, Emma secured a remarkable par five and with Lorna unable to match her, Emma won the hole to go three  up with five to play.

An excellent approach to four feet set up a winning birdie three at the fourteenth saw Emma go dormie four and whilst both players hit their approach shots to within fifteen feet on the difficult fifteenth green, Lorna's putt just failed to drop whilst Emma slotted home her effort to win the hole with a second successive birdie three, and more importantly take her first Ayrshire Ladies County Golf Association Championship title with a 5 & 3 victory.

At the conclusion of play Prestwick Golf Club Captain Dr. Paul Stevens, who acted as referee for the final, presented prizes to both finalists and other successful players during the week, before handing the trophy over to the 2016 champion, Emma Hale.

2016 Championship Matchplay

Poor weather again at Prestwick this morning for the first round of the match play with heavy rain and still a gusty wind. First round results were:

Emma Hale beat Barbara Beckett 7&5
Pauline Patrick beat Joanne Sharp 3&1
Debbie Watt beat Linda McDonald 5&4
Louise Duncan beat Margaret Miller 8&7
Lesley Barker beat Sally Hamilton 4&3
Alex Glennie beat Annie Howie 3&2
Lorna Ronnie beat Liz Wilson 3&2
Audrey Thompson beat Liz Keohone 3&2

Emma Hale, Troon Ladies, won by 8&7 this afternoon against Pauline Patrick, Irvine, to book her place in tomorrows semi-final of the Ayrshire Ladies County Championship.  In the morning she will face Louise Duncan, West Kilbride, who beat Debbie Watt, Belleisle, 7&6.

The other semi final will be between Alex Glennie, Barassie, champion at West Kilbride in 2004, and club mate Lorna Ronnie, a new member to Ayrshire ladies.

Alex won through this afternoon against another Barassie member, Lesley Barker, by 5&4 whereas Lorna had a tougher route to the semi final going to the 18th green against losing 2013 finalist Audrey Thompson, Loudoun, eventually winning by 1 hole.

Tomorrow's play kicks off at 8:45am with Hale V Duncan followed by Glennie V Ronnie at 9:00am.

Final will be at about 1:30pm (we will keep you posted on the exact time) Please come along and show the ladies your support, they have all battled hard, not just against each other but the weather too and I'm sure they could do with a boost to get through that last round!

2016 Championship

77 ladies battled against strong gusty winds at Prestwick Golf Club today in the Ayrshire Ladies County Championship qualifying round.  Not surprisingly it was a reduction only outcome.

Unfortunately last years Champion, Catherine Malcolm, Prestwick St Cuthbert, was unable to defend her title having to pull out due to illness.

Emma Hale, Troon Ladies, repeated her performance from last year by finishing top qualifier with an excellent score of 83.  Jenny Linklater, Largs, was second scratch with an 85 but is unable to go through to the Match Play.

Winter Foursomes Final

The final of the Winter Foursomes took place at Kilmarnock Barassie Golf Club on Sunday, 13 March, on a lovely Spring day.

The winners, of the all Barassie final, were Helen McGibbon and Fiona Brawley with the match going to the 19th hole.

Joanne Sharp and Helen Love took an early lead going one up with the match continuing in the usual match play fashion with never much in it.

Sharp and Love had gone one up but the match was squared at the 16th and the remaining holes were halved, taking it up the 19th where Fiona Brawley sank the winning putt.

Thanks to Liz Wilson for the report

All Barassie Final

Joanne Sharp and Helen Love (Barassie) defeated Pauline Patrick and Linda Parry (Irvine) in their semi final of the winter foursomes.  Waiting for them in the final are Helen McGibbon and Fiona Brawley (Barassie) who earlier defeated Jill West (Irvine) and Margaret Miller)

Good luck to all the ladies playing in the final

Girls' Friendly Match 28th of February

Ayrshire Girls were off to Lanark for their friendly match against Lanarkshire on Sunday.   It was a beautiful sunny morning all the way up the clyde valley but on reaching the carpark the course was shrouded in mist and the course closed!   However, over the next 45 minutes, the mist started to lift, the sun shone through and, by 12 o'clock the scheduled tee off time, it was perfect!   The result was a very friendly halved match with two wins and two losses.   The standard of golf was very good considering the winter weather.....the girls clearly have all been working hard on the practice ranges.   Playing for Ayrshire were Rachel Foster (Turnberry), Claire McLaughlin (West Kilbride), Katy Hill (Prestwick St. Cuthbert's) and Gemma Paton (Loudoun).   Well done girls!
