Scottish Girls Open

Following on from a good start to the season where Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) finished in 15th place in the Scottish Girls' Open at Monifieth last month, an event which attracted a huge number of talented European players, Louise was the winner in another big event at the weekend. Playing in the annual 72 hole Open International Scratch Championship for boys and girls aged 18 or under at Fairhaven Golf Club in Lancashire, Louise's rounds of 73, 71, 75 and 73 for a total of 292 won the girls' event by 2 strokes. If that doesn't make her enough of a legend, this is the first time a Scottish girl has won this event! Many congratulations Louise!

Girls Under 16's Championship

Players from 11 different countries teed up for the inaugural Girls' Under 16's Open Championship run by the R & A.   Played over Fulford near York, Rachel Foster (Prestwick St. Nicholas) had two excellent rounds of 77 and 75, marred only by an 85 in round 2.   The CSS for the three rounds was 73, 73, 74.   Rachel finished a very creditable 29th out of a field of 90 very talented girls.  Scottish Girls' 2017 champion Hannah Darling came from behind to win the event on 218.   Well done Rachel!

Lorna Ronnie ALCGA 2018 Champion!

It was a very close final this afternoon between Lorna Ronnie and Alex
Glennie.

Lorna took a 3 hole lead after 14 holes but Alex pulled 2 holes back to stand on the 18th tee one down.  A great approach shot to the green meant she was in with a chance of taking the match to the 19th hole but the putt didn't drop.

Congratulations to Lorna who played some great golf all week to win her first Ayrshire County Championship.

Thanks to all those who came along to support.

Girls' Spring Salver

Spring was never in the air today as the mini "beast from the east" attacked Ardeer Golf course creating sub zero temperatures from the wind chill factor.   It was bitterly cold so the competition was cut to 9 holes.   Luisa Gibson (12) successfully defended the trophy recording a nett 37 with Cristina McCracken (30) close behind on 39.
Connie Greig and Melissa Graham shared the spoils in the Pre-handicap competition played over 6 holes.

Winter Foursomes Final

L to R Captain Liz Wilson with the finalists - Aileen Anderson, Sheila Adams, Helen Craig and Irene Papworth

Due to temporary greens in play at Prestwick St Nicholas, the final of the Winter Foursomes was moved to Kilmarnock Barassie today.  It was a dry but extremely cold day with everyone well wrapped up against the elements!

Guess who?

We even had some flurries of snow!

Secretary Ann, happy to rake the bunker to generate some heat!

Delighted to see our Honorary President, Nancy Chisholm, brave the elements to come and support the finalists.

To the match itself, Helen and Irene got off to a flying start with a great putt to win the first hole.  However, the Loudoun pair of Sheila and Aileen hit some great form, including a birdie at the Railway hole, to end the front nine 4 up!

They stretched their lead to 5 after the 11th but a fantastic fight back from Helen and Irene, winning 5 of the next 6 holes took them to the 18th all square.

Extra holes looked on the cards but a 2 putt from long range was good enough for Sheila and Aileen to win by one hole.

Well done ladies, a great match in difficult conditions.  Congratulations Sheila and Aileen.

Winter Foursomes

West Kilbride was the venue again for the second semi final of this years Winter Foursomes.  A pretty decent day considering the recent spell of winter weather!
A very close game with home player Helen Craig, partnered by Skelmorlie member Irene Papworth, winning at the 17th hole against Ann Wallace and Moyra Withycombe from Prestwick St Nicholas.

L to R Ann, Moyra, Helen and Irene

Today's winners will now play Sheila Adams and Aileen Anderson, Loudoun Gowf Club, in the final.  Date and venue tbc

Winter Foursomes

The first of the Winter Foursomes semi-finals took place today at a very cold, but dry, West Kilbride.  The winners were Sheila Adams and Aileen Anderson (Loudoun) well done girls.

Post from your Captain

Happy new year to all lady golfers of Ayrshire
I hope you are all well, and enjoyed the festive season.
After a turbulent start to my 1st year as ALCGA captain, things have quickly settled down and the committee and myself are committed to driving Ayrshire onward and upward,
Thanks to all Ayrshire lady members and friends who joined us at Barassie, for our cookery demonstration night.
Which everyone enjoyed, and proves there’s more to life than golf.
Watch this space for our next social event, hopefully March time.
These events and golf competitions don’t run by themselves, and I really do appreciate all committee members, who strive to make Ayrshire enjoyable for everyone
We have made a concerted effort to recruit new members, please see your notice boards, where county reps post news on memberships, winter ties & social events.
We have 5 new members, whom I’m sure you’ll all welcome to ALCGA
A subtle reminder that subscriptions are now due, and should be made before the end of January, by either cheque or bank transfer. Don’t forget for voucher winners that if Santa was good to you and you don’t need any golf equipment, vouchers can be used as payment.
I wish you all the best for the forthcoming season, and look forward to playing our great courses in Ayrshire
Always yours
Liz Wilson
