McCall Salver Final

Monday 24th September

A cold and blustery Kilmarnock Barassie was the venue today for our 2 finalists Sandra Wright (Troon Ladies) and Jill Fox (West Kilbride). Congratulations to both who played a very friendly and competitive match under very difficult weather conditions. At the 18th hole the match was all square and looked like to be heading for the 19th. The last putt on the 18th green clinched the match and congratulations to Jill Fox on winning the McCall Salver.

Kennedy Salver Win for Lanarkshire Girls
Lanarkshire's Girls' Team came out on top in the West Division Inter-County Junior Matches played at West Kilbride yesterday. The defending champions Ayrshire made a solid start winning all three foursomes matches in the morning to take the lead on 3 points with Lanarkshire close behind on 2, Renfrewshire 1 and D. & A. 0. Playing in sunshine but with a very strong wind in the afternoon, the Lanarkshire girls forged ahead winning 5 out of their 6 singles matches giving them 7 points overall for victory, a very creditable performance. Ayrshire were runners-up on 5, Renfrewshire 4 and D. & A. 2. For Junior Convenors and spectators alike, it was a joy to see all the girls enjoying themselves and playing their games in the true spirit of golf.

SUMMER MEETING AT KILMACOLM

Due to the course flooding and becoming unplayable, the summer meeting had to be abandoned.

For  those who finished their rounds, the SSS becomes the  CSS  which is 72 and the competition will count for reduction only.

"Once the play of a round has started, if it is clear that not all the field can complete their rounds and the event cannot be continued later, the Committee has no option but to cancel the round.  If the event is a qualifying competition for handicap purposes the round becomes Reduction Only with the CSS and SSS and handicap adjustments made only for competitions with a Nett Differential of less than zero (CONGUS UMS Clause 18.7).
Congratulations to Renfrewshire on winning the Inter-County Match week at Cardross.  My thanks to all the Ayrshire team members who tried so hard to keep hold of the salver we won last year, but it was not to be - there will always be next year!!  My thanks also to Vice-Captain Sheila and President Eila for their on-going support and encouragement, to all those who gallantly pulled trolleys, some twice in one day! and for the cards and good wishes sent by members.  Next year's meeting will be held at Bothwell Castle, Lanarkshire, where I hope to see lots more trolley-pullers and supporters.

For some video of the jamboree go to  URTV Ayrshire.  There is an interview with our Captain Sandie and Connie Jaffrey.

FANDANGO

Some pictures of our team mascot - a frog who was called Fergus but has been renamed Fandango!

June Kerr reports from Jamboree:

Pity the team didn't get a win out of either of the first two days but they were agonisingly close with all those last hole results. I pulled for Connie this afternoon which was great - she tweaked a few tee shots and fairway woods right over the first few holes but she sorted it out and came good. They halved the first 3 in par, then Connie bogied 4th to lose it, opponent birdied the par 3 so 2 down but all square by the 9th and kept that winning streak going to win by 3/2. It was lovely to watch the ball striking and a gorgeous afternoon.

JAMBOREE

The Jamboree begins at Cardross Golf Club on Monday (18th June).  We hope some of you can come along and support our team.

Trolley pullers are still required - if you can help please contact Sheila Shedden on 01292 267761 or e-mail on sheila.shedden1@btinternet.com

Our team is:

Linzi Allan (West Kilbride GC);
Lesley Hendry (Largs Routenburn GC);
Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies GC);
Jenny Linklater (Largs GC);
Catherine Malcolm (Prestwick St. Nicholas GC);
Mhairi McKay (West Kilbride GC);
Rachel McQueen (Troon Ladies GC);
Audrey Thompson (Loudon GC);

Reserve: Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie GC).
The West Championships were held yesterday, Sunday 6th May. over 36 holes in rather cold conditions at Renfrew Golf Club.
There were only 4 entries from Ayrshire (2 of which were juniors), so we couldn't enter a senior team.  We did enter the junior team event which we led after the morning rounds, but one of the juniors signed her card with the wrong handicap on it so she was disqualified. This was very unfortunate as we would have regained the salver! She was understandably very upset when she realised what she had done.
Full Ayrshire results as follows:

Jenny Linklater (Largs)                   82 - 4 = 78 a.m.
                                                         79 - 4 = 75 p.m.
Mhairi McKay (West Kilbride)       85 - 6 = 79 a.m.
                                                          86 - 6 = 80 p.m.
Emma Hale (Troon Ladies)              83 - 5 = 78 a.m.
                                                         84 - 5 = 79 p.m.
Hazel McGarvie (Troon)                 85 - 9 = 76 a.m.
                                                                 92 - 9 = 83 p.m. D/Q

The overall winner was Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) with a gross 75am and a gross 72 pm.

The annual intercounty Jamboree is taking place at CARDROSS GC from Monday 18th June - Wednesday 20th June.

Wed       20th June      D & A               v      Lanarkshire
                                   Renfrewshire     v      Ayrshire   9.10am and 2.22 pm

We need 6 trolley pushers for the foursomes each morning and 6 each afternoon for the singles.

For those who haven't been before, it is a great day out and gives our members an opportunity to support our girls first hand.

If your would like to help please add your name to the list when you are available or e-mail Fiona on secretary@alcga.com

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP  -  DAY 3

On a dry but cold and breezy morning our four semi-finalists gathered on the first tee to do battle for a place in the afternoon final.  In the first match, between Mhairi Mckay and Jane Finnie, Mhairi went in to an early lead and although several holes were halved, Jane fought back and was only one down at the 18th, however Mhairi won 2 up.  In the second match between Lesley Hendry and Alex Glennie, Lesley came out on top winning 4 and 3.
                                                  Lesley and Alex

By the afternoon the sun had come out and the wind dropped quite considerably.  Lesley went in to an early lead winning the first two holes.  Mhairi pulled one back but Lesley began to put on the pressure and eventually won 4 and 3 regaining the trophy which she had lost to Rachel McQueen last year.
                                                  Lesley Hendry our 2012 Ayrshire Champion

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP  -  DAY 2

On a much brighter day than yesterday, the 16 qualifiers began the knockout section of the County Championship.  First on the tee at 9.00am were Catherine Malcolm and Jill West.  Catherine finally went on to win 4 and 3.  Catherine Garrett and Mhairi McKay played out the West Kilbride "Duel" with Mhairi winning 5 and 4.  Jane Finnie beat Rachel Irvine 5 and 3;  Ros Purdom beat Gillian Henderson 7 and 6; Lesley Hendry beat Barbara Beckett 5 and 3; Pauline Patrick beat Sheila Adams 3 and 2; Audrey Thompson beat Sara-Ann Bottomly 4 and 3; and Alex Glennie beat Nora McCrossan 6 and 5.

The sunshine and light breeze continued into the afternoon and the semi-finals gave us some very close and exciting matches.  In a "nip & tuck" situation, the first match out, which was Mhairi McKay against Catherine Malcolm, saw  Mhairi finally come out on top at the 19th hole.  In the second match Jane Finnie beat Ros Purdom 7 and 6, and the third match saw Lesley Hendry beat Pauline Patrick 3 and 2.  The final match, Alex Glennie versus Audrey Thompson, also went the full distance with Alex winning on the 18th green 1 up.

Tomorrow promises to give us some more exciting games.  The first semi-final match will tee-off at 9.00am and the final will commence at 2.00pm.  I'm sure our four players would appreciate some support tomorrow so try and come along and see who will be our 2012 Champion.
COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

The qualifying round for the County Championship took place to-day at the Ladies Golf Club Troon.  The early starters had blustery and showery conditions but those who had a later tee-time enjoyed much calmer drier and at times very sunny conditions.  A field of 61 ladies participated and some good scores were recorded on a very well set up course, in excellent condition especially after the terrible winter we have had.

Catherine Malcolm (Prestwick St. Nicholas) recorded the best gross of the day, a 77 and heads the field of 16 qualifiers who will battle out the match-play section beginning at 9.00am tomorrow morning.
The other qualifiers are:-  Alex Glennie, Lesley Hendry, Ros. Purdom, Jane Finnie, Pauline Patrick, Audrey Thompson, Mhairi McKay, Catherine Garrett, Sara-Ann Bottomly, Sheila Adams, Rachel Irvine, Gillian Henderson, Barbara Beckett, Jill West and Nora McCrossan.

The par was 75 and the CSS was 75.

Winter Fours Final

Kath McKellar & Jenny McGee (Skelmorlie)
versus
Ann McGillivray & Mara Lindsay (Prestwick, St. Nicholas)

The Winter Fours final was played to-day at West Kilbride Golf Club in dry but cold and blustery conditions. At times some excellent golf was executed by both pairings but Kath & Jenny began to edge ahead on the back nine and finally beat Mara & Ann on the 15th winning 4&3. Despite the cold weather it was nice to see a few members both past and present there to lend their support.

Nancy Chisholm and Ann Boyd toasting the competitors.

Jessie Donaldson almost ready to step onto the 1st tee!

Ann Boyd and Liz Aitcheson brave the elements at the windswept 13th hole.

Winter Fours

The final of this years Winter Fours Competition will be between Kath MacKellor & Jenny Mc Gee and Mara Lindsaay & Ann McGillivrey.  This will be played on Wednesday March 21st at West Kilbride Golf Club, tee-off at 2.00pm.  Well done to both pairs on reaching this stage of the competition and we look forward to a very competitive final.

2012 SLGA Annual General Meeting

The SLGA AGM took place yesterday January 28th at the Dewars Centre in Perth and was attended by Captain Sandie Streets, Vice-Captain Sheila Adams and Secretary Fiona Collier along with several other Ayrshire County members.
The outgoing SLGA president Emma Wilson opened the meeting by paying tribute to Moira Milton, Liz Miskimmin and Moira Thomson who had all passed away in the last year and a minutes silence was observed in their memory.
The SLGA Chairman, Ayrshire's Shona Malcolm, gave a synopsis of her Annual Report which was followed by the Financial Director Lynne Terry's detailed revue of the accounts.  Lorna Bennett, the Scottish representative on the Executive Council of the LGU then gave her annual report.
Margaret MacNaughton was elected as the new President and the 12 Vice-Presidents (including Ayrshire's Nancy Chisholm) were all re-elected.
ALCGA's Isabel Crawford was elected to the board in charge of training replacing Beth Paterson who has retired after 4 years.
Lynne Terry steps down as Finance Director (after 10 years service) as will Company Secretary Sheila Hartley who retires in February.  Lynne Terry and Jean McEwan were re-appointed as the Scottish representatives on CONGU.
Two new Scottish Selectors were appointed - Noreen Fenton (East) and Addi Shamash (South).  Anne Laing (West) and Cara Gruber (North) remain as selectors for a second year. Isabel Crawford was re-appointed as the Scottish Representative on the International Selection Committee of the LGU and her deputy is Fiona de Vries.
There was no further discussion on the amalgamation with the SGU as a new Amalgamation Chairman has just been appointed so further talks will now be resumed.
AOB  The use of Distance Measuring Devices was brought up. The SLGA are still following the R&A advice, however, Shona Malcolm did state that with so many Clubs and Organisations allowing their use she was sure that this would possibly have to change - heres hoping!!
There being no further business the meeting was closed.
