Dundonald

It was great to see so many of our up and coming Junior girls enjoying the Ladies golf at Dundonald last week.

One big Min Jee Lee fan was delighted to receive her cap after she finished her round on Sunday! Here she is proudly wearing her gift. Stefi has been a follower of Min Jee since she met her at Dundonald last year and followed her every round this year.

Coronation Medals results

Other than a short, unexpected, shower the weather was ideal for the 56 ladies who took part in our Coronation Medals competition at Seafield today. The course was shortened due to some work being carried out by South Ayrshire Council and it was therefore a non counter. However, there were still some great scores recorded.

2nd Sheila Adams (Loudoun) 82 - 14 = 68

2nd Annette Toal (Loudoun) 88 - 22 = 66

Our Junior girls played their recent competition at Dalmilling golf club. Only 7 entries for this event but there were some excellent scores with Tammi Grady (Irvine) winning with 88 - 16 = 72 closely followed by club mate Orla Moran 84 - 11 = 73

Well done girls

Scottish Girls Amateur Championship

Two of our Juniors had success at the recent Scottish Girls Amateur at Cardrona Golf Club. Freya Russell (Royal Troon) qualified in 2nd place after the 36 hole match play event. She shot rounds of 75 and 76 to finish one stroke behind the top qualifier. In the match play she had a convincing win in the first round followed by a win in the quarter finals by 2 holes. Unfortunately, after a close match, she lost out by one hole to the 3rd placed qualifier in the semi finals.

Katie Ronnie (Barassie) qualified in 2nd place for the nett match play event. She was given a walk over in the first round then won by 2&1 in the quarter finals. Sadly, Katie took unwell over might and was unable to play in the semi finals the next day.

A good event for both girls. Well done

Pat Cairns Smith

It is with great sadness that I report the death of Past Captain, Pat Cairns Smith who celebrated her 100th birthday last year.

Pat was a life long member of The Ladies Golf Club, Troon, having joined in 1939 and also had a very long lasting connection with ALCGA. She Captained the side who won the Scottish County Finals at Prestwick back in 1970.

Pat is pictured seated, in the middle, with the rest of the 1970 team.

Our thoughts go out to her family and friends and this sad time.

After the morning foursomes, Ayrshire were tied with D&A for the lead with both teams gaining 2 points. However D&A proved too strong in the afternoon and won the salver with 7 points. Ayrshire tied second with Renfrewshire on 4.5 points and Lanarkshire finished with 2 points.

Inter County Matches

A very exciting Jamboree this year at Williamwood Golf Club with the outcome being decided on a count back after 3 great days of competitive golf.

Our Ayrshire team performed so well given that it was quite a new group of players after 4 changes from the team that went to Stathaven last year.

On day one we played D&A and were unlucky to only get one point out of 3 from the morning foursomes. The singles went our way by 3.5 to 2.5 so a halved match overall. Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire also halved their match so it was all to play for on day 2.

Day 2 and our opponents were last years winners Lanarkshire. It was a disappointing start with a whitewash for Lanarkshire in the foursomes but the girls rallied to to win 3 points out of 6 in the afternoon singles. A loss on the day of 6 points to 3. Renfrewshire beat D&A by 6.5 points to 2.5 points.

The final day saw us take on our hosts Renfrewshire. So many possibilities for the overall outcome with all 4 counties still in with a chance of winning. The girls got off to a fantastic start taking the foursomes by 2.5 to 0.5. Renfrewshire came out strongly in the afternoon and took the singles by 4.5 to 1.5 meaning a win for them by 5 points to 4. It did look at one point that we may have edged the match and 3 of the games went to the 18th but it wasn't to be.

Lanarkshire also won their match against D&A by 5 points to 4 which left them and Renfrewshire with the same number of points for the 3 days. It then went to a count back of games won with Renfrewshire winning with 16 compared to Lanarkshires 15.5. Could hardly have been closer. Ayrshire and D&A also finished on the same number of points but finished third on a countback.

Conditions at Williamwood were very difficult for all the players given the intense heat - we even had a lightning scare on Monday with the players having to be called off the course. Therefore a big thank you has to go to all our trolley pullers who gave up their time to come and help us out.

Thank you to our hosts for all their efforts and endless supply of water!

Congratulations to Donna and her Renfrewshire team and good luck to them at the Scottish Finals at Hilton Park in September.

Scottish Women's Championship

Ayrshire Ladies team member Luisa Gibson (Irvine Golf Club) carded 2 rounds of 72 to finish the stroke play event in second place on 2 over par. Fantastic scoring.

She was joined in the match play stages by Hannah Ounap (Loudoun Gowf Club) who qualified tied 3rd on 5 over par.

In a nail biting first round Luisa won her match at the 19th hole but, unfortunately, Hannah lost, in another close game, by 2&1

Luisa lost out in the afternoon quarter finals against an in form Ailsa Brannock (Southerness).

Having missed out for the championship match play by one shot, Freya Russell (Royal Troon) had an excellent run in the Clark Rosebowl making it all the way to the final. Unfortunately Freya lost at the 17th hole in a tight final to local girl Eilidh Henderson

Champion Roz

There was a great display of golf from both players this afternoon in very tricky conditions.

Susan took an early lead but the match was squared at the 5th. Roz took a 2 hole lead into the back 9 which she extended to 3 after the 12th. Susan did get one back but Roz held on to win her first County Championship at the 16th hole.

Great to see so many members, past and present, out supporting the girls.

Beetle drive

Over 70 members and friends enjoyed a social night at Irvine golf club with a beetle drive, quiz and bingo.

It was the First social event held since pre covid and the support from our members was great. It was also nice to see some of our new members joining in the fun.

The proceeds from the night went to the earthquake disaster fund and, after gift aiding we were able to donate £817.50.

The Captain and committee would like to thank all who attended and those who brought raffle prizes and donations.
