Ayrshire v Renfrewshire Girls' Friendly Match

The girls were treated to a beautiful, 'though cold, day at Pollok for the return match against Renfrewshire.  Of the three matches on the course, Ayrshire won two and lost one.   In the top game, a singles, Claire McLaughlin was 3 down but turned it around to win by 2 holes.  The remaining games were greensomes where Katy Hill and Freya Russell found it tough giving 22 strokes to their opponents who played lovely golf, while Luisa Gibson and Cristina McCracken played steadily to win their game.  All the girls enjoyed the opportunity of playing a lovely golf course and appreciated the warm welcome from Renfrewshire and Pollok ðŸ˜Š

Honorary Membership for Connie Jaffrey

At last nights AGM the members unanimously accepted the proposal of Connie Jaffrey, Troon Ladies, for Honorary Membership of the Ayrshire Ladies County Golf Association.

New Captain, Liz Wilson, Barassie, highlighted a number of Connie's many golfing achievements over the past 9 years. From her debut in the Junior Kennedy Salver team in 2008, aged 12, to winning the Scottish Ladies Amateur Championship this year and many other highs in between!

Connie is in her final year at Kansas State University where she recently picked up her 4th individual title with an impressive 3 round total of 9 under par.

Connie was absolutely delighted to accept this honour.

Centenary Trophy

Luisa Gibson wins on a count-back!
Playing in the Centenary Trophy stableford competition at West Kilbride today, two girls made the most of the calm, sunny conditions amassing 40 points, Luisa Gibson (Ardeer) taking the trophy on the better inward half from holder Claire McLaughlin (West Kilbride).  Cristina McCracken (Troon Ladies) was 3rd on 31 points.

4 Pre-handicap Girls played 6 holes from forward tees, Melissa Graham (Barassie) scoring 35, runner-up Katie Ronnie (Barassie) on 36, closely followed by Connie Greig (Barassie) and Tammi Grady (Caldwell).  Katie won the putting competition after a play-off involving all four girls.

Well played girls.

Congratulations to Freya Russell who was Runner-up in the West of Scotland Girls Bronze Championship played this morning over Troon Portland.  Conditions were extremely difficult for the girls who did very well to battle the strong winds and heavy rain showers, Freya just losing out on the 17th green.   Well done Freya ðŸ˜Š

McCall Salver Final

What a great game at Loudoun today between Margaret Gillies (West Kilbride) and Sandra Carruthers (Prestwick St Nicholas) in the final of the McCall salver.

The game was all square at the turn with Sandra taking the lead on the 11th then Margaret winning 12 to take it back to all square. Thirteen was halved, Margaret took 14 and 15, going 2 up but Sandra won 16.

The 17th was halved which meant Margaret headed to 18 one up where she got the half she needed to win the match.

A very deserving winner in a super game which was played in a very friendly manner.

Thanks go to Loudoun Gowf Club for allowing us courtesy to host the final

Ayrshire Girls County Championship and St Nicholas Trophy (Largs GC)

Alison Malcolm (Prestwick St. Cuthbert's) successfully defended the St. Nicholas Trophy today at Largs Golf Club. Alison's nett 75 was 2 strokes clear of runner-up Samantha McKay (Loudoun). A new trophy for the best scratch was being competed for and Rachel Foster is the first winner with an 82. As County Champion Rachel goes forward to Scottish Golf's Champion of Champions later in the year. The trophy wasn't available for the photograph but will be presented at the A.G.M. Well done to all the girls who played today.

Dundonald Pro Am's

County Captain Liz and her team finished 3rd in the Pro-Am at Dundonald winning a bottle of champagne.   Louise Duncan played superb golf alongside her Professional Lydia Ko.   Claire McLaughlin was in Matt Kucher's team at the Men's Open and Claire won a prize for the longest drive in the Ladies Pro-Am.   At Kingsbarns this week, Rachel Foster was one of three young girls playing with Professional Alison Lee and their team finished 4th with each of the girls winning a 52 degree Titliest wedge! ðŸ˜Š    Thanks to Tom Foster for the photographs

Junior update

After qualifying in top spot in the Scottish Girls' last week, Louise made it through to the semi-finals losing by 2 & 1 to the eventual winner Hannah Darling.   In the 2nd flight handicap matchplay competition, Claire McLaughlin (West Kilbride) reached the final losing a very close match on the 18th.   Both Louise and Claire have been invited by Scottish Golf to play in the Scottish Women's Pro-Am at Dundonald on 26th July.   I'm sure our young girls would love to see some friendly faces supporting them as they play alongside the professionals.....what a fabulous opportunity.   Congratulations girls!
Rachel Foster (Turnberry) also has lots to look forward to ðŸ˜Š   Rachel is one of 6 girls selected by Scottish Golf to experience a trip of a lifetime.   The girls will travel to Des Moines Golf & Country Club in Iowa where the Solheim Cup is to be played this year from 18th - 20th August and where Catriona Matthew is a vice-captain.   They will form part of the handover ceremony for the 2019 Solheim coming to Gleneagles.   To read the full press release visit www.scottishgolf.org/news   The girls will also be part of two Pro-Am teams competing in the Ricoh Women's British Open at Kingsbarns on 1st August.  All your hard work has paid off Rachel, very well done, you deserve these wonderful opportunities ðŸ˜Š
Ayrshire wish all three of you the Very Best as you play alongside the professionals, we know you'll be brilliant!

Scottish Girls Amateur Championship

Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) leads the qualifiers in the Scottish Girls' Amateur Championship.   In the first round yesterday at Drumoig Louise had 8 birdies in her round of 69 to be 4 under par.   2 over for 74 at Scotscraig today leaves Louise leading the field by 5 shots going into the matchplay where the top 16 scratch players will battle out for the National title.   Rachel Foster (Turnberry) had rounds of 84 and 80 to land in 16th spot so the two Ayrshire girls will meet tomorrow in the first round.   Claire McLaughlin (West Kilbride) narrowly missed out in the top flight but qualifies for the nett matchplay trophy where a further 16 girls continue on a knock-out basis.   The CSS for both days was 74.      Good luck to our three Ayrshire Girls!
As top qualifier Louise has earned a place in the Scottish Ladies Open Pro-Am at Dundonald Links on Wednesday, 26th July - what a treat to look forward to!   Well done Louise ðŸ˜Š

Ayrshire Girls' Runner-Up in Kennedy Salver

Our Ayrshire Girls' Team came so close to taking the trophy yesterday at Clober losing to Lanarkshire by only half a point.   In the morning foursomes Samantha McKay and Cristina McCracken put a point on the board for us, D & A had one point, while Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire shared the lead with two points each.

In the top singles, Rachel Foster giving 9 strokes found herself 3 down but managed to fight back on the inward 9 to finish with a halved match.   Sarah Ramsay had a faltering start to be 4 down early on but she too rallied and won by 2 & 1.   Number three for Ayrshire was 11 year old Freya Russell who was playing a very experienced Lanarkshire player 6 years her senior.   Her opponent's tee shot to 6 feet at the 15th, a blind par 3, was just too good to allow the match to continue any further.   Samantha won again in the afternoon, while Cristina 1 down with two to play hit beautifully down the last two holes and putted to perfection to win both holes and gain another point for the team.   Lanarkshire finished on 6 points, Ayrshire 5.5, D & A 3.5 and Renfrewshire 3.

The course was in super condition and looked beautiful, the weather was tremendous, but the thing that shone out was the friendliness and happy faces of all the girls across the four counties and the spirit in which the games were played.Congratulations to Lanarkshire, worthy winners of the Kennedy Salver despite being a player short this year.   To my Ayrshire team.........you were magnificent!     .........Kath and I had a fabulous day 😊

British Amature Championship

Our Connie was back at it again this week. Following her success at the Scottish Amature in Aberdeen, Connie shot a first round score of 75 (+4) and a second round of 71 (par) to qualify T22 at the British Amature Championship at Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club, South Wales.
Unfortunately in the first round of match play Connie's opponent (E Osborn from Sweden) birdied 17 and 18 to win the match by 1 hole.

Well done champ, we are all very proud!

Inter-county Matches - Day 2

Day two of the West Division Inter-county Matches saw wins for Ayrshire (6.5-2.5 against D&A) and Renfrewshire (5-4 against Lanarkshire).
The Ayrshire Ladies went 3-0 up in the morning with strong foursomes play and secured 3.5 points in the afternoon singles against some tough opposition on the greens.

Day three will see our team playing against the home tean Lanarkshire with the foursomes starting at 9.30am.

Good luck team!!

Inter County Matches - Day 1 results

After day 1 at Hamilton Golf Club. Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire are in the lead.

Renfrewshire turned the tables this year and defeated our Ayrshire team. All the matches were closely fought with 4 out of the 9 going to the 18th.

Today our Ayrshire girls will be up against defending champions D&A, with the foursomes kicking off at 9.30am.

Connie Jaffrey - Scottish Amature Champion 2017!

Connie used a brilliant short game and excellent putting to surge five up at the turn, having gone out in four under par with birdies at the first, fourth, sixth and ninth.
Clara Young did not win a hole until the 11th but it triggered off a two-under-par run which saw her also win the 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th - five in a row, a magnificent fightback which saw her square the match on the 15th. However the miserable weather saw to Clara's rally petered out. She bogeyed the 16th to go one down again and then was plugged in the thick and wet rough with her second shot at the 18th, moving the ball only a few feet, and eventually conceded a 10ft birdie putt to go down by two holes.
Well done Connie! We are all very proud of you and good luck next week!

Connie in Scottish Ladies Finals Tomorrow

Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies), and Clara Young (North Berwick), will contest Saturday's 18-hole final of the 103rd Scottish women's amateur championship over Royal Aberdeen's Balgownie links (8.30am tee off).

Connie was Ayrshire Champion and Scottish U18 girls champion in 2013 and beaten finalist in the Scottish Ladies Amature Championship at Prestwick by Gabrielle MacDonald in the same year, will start slight favourite to win what should be an intriguing contest.

Connie ,who KO'd the North's last hope, Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey) by 2 and 1 in the morning quarter-finals, was five under par in winning her semi-final by 3 and 2 against 17-year-old professional's daughter, Jillian Farrell.

Connie had six birdies in all, including three of the last four holes played to end the match on the 15th green but Farrell did not go down without a fight and was all square at the turn, both players having gone out in two-under-par 37.

Clara Young, Scottish champion at Monifieth in 2015, has carried on the impressive form - 16 under par for 54 holes - which saw her win the St Rule Trophy at St Andrews last week.

Scottish Womens Amateur Championship at Royal Aberdeen

Emma Hale (Troon Ladies) was joint leader, from an impressive field, after the first round qualifier played on Tuesday when the rain didn't stop all day! Emma shot a one over par score of 77 and 17 year old Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) also had a great round scoring 79.

The second qualifying round was cancelled yesterday due to winds gusting over 40 mph making putting impossible on the exposed greens.

The 32 qualifiers were therefore decided on scores returned on Tuesday only.  Unfortunately Louise wasn't able to play in the matchplay due to her school prom which left Emma and Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) playing in the knockout stages.

Emma lost this morning to Kimberley Beveridge while Connie had 2 good wins today taking her through to the last 8 tomorrow.

All the best from Ayrshire Connie, we are with you in spirit!

Both Emma and Louise will be playing for Ayrshire in the Inter County matches at Hamilton Golf Club next week.

Loudoun Postponed!

Due to the dreadful weather this morning the Loudoun competition for today has been cancelled.  Proposed new date is Wednesday 21 June, please email the secretary if you are able to play then.

Birdie Fest!!

Playing in the 36 hole Munross Trophy at Montrose last Sunday, Louise Duncan and Rachel Foster both returned rounds of 72 and 75 which included 16 birdies between them!

In round 1 Louise birdied the 2nd followed by 5, 6, and 7 then 5th and 7th again in round 2. Rachel's first round had 7 birdies - the 2nd then 5, 7, 8, 11, 12 and 14.  In round 2 the 5th, 6th and 17th.

The girls finished tied 7th in a field of 40 in this ladies ranking tournament.  SSS 73 and CSS 73 for both rounds.

Congratulations - you are both superstars!!

Junior Tour

Rachel Foster had two 81's to finish a very creditable 4th in the Junior Tour Under 14's at Turnhouse at the weekend.   11 year old Freya Russell was 99, 87 and finished 9th from a field of 18 girls.   Claire McLaughlin 84 and 88 placed her 5th from 10 in the Under 16's also over Turnhouse.   CSS 73 for both rounds.   Well done girls!

McQueen Salver Trophy

We had a very enjoyable day at Rowallan Castle Golf Club on Sunday 14 May when the Ayrshire ladies team retained the trophy after a 2-2 match against the gents.  This has become a very popular event in the Ayrshire golf calendar.

Both Junior matches were won by the boys but the Ladies won their matches to tie the match.  Having won the trophy last year at Loudoun this meant that the cup was retained.

The McQueen family was represented on the day by, past Ayrshire Champion and team member, Rachael McQueen and her parents.  Rachael is pictured with the winning team (above) and the gents team (below)

Ayrshire Girls Team Match

An Ayrshire Girls' Friendly Match was played against Renfrewshire Girls at Skelmorlie on Saturday.  The course was in great condition, the sun was shining, the views amazing, but...... there was a strong wind blowing making conditions very tricky!   Nevertheless, all the girls enjoyed the day.... gaining matchplay experience, playing a different type of golf course and making new friends:)   Well done Ayrshire for recording the win!  5.5 points to 0.5.

Helen Holm Championship

Hazel MacGarvie finished Tied 31 out of a very strong field of European players competing in the Helen Holm last weekend.   Hazel's 73 and 74 over Portland was followed up with 77 over Royal Troon in tricky windy conditions.   Emma Hale who finished T50 up three places from where she was after the first two rounds with a 76 on the final day. The CSS was 76 on all three rounds - well done Hazel on a splendid performance. Thank you to all the girls who did an excellent job on the scoreboards, I hope you enjoyed your day on the course!

4's at Seafield on Tuesday 9 May.

Please click here for the draw for our next meeting - 4's at Seafield on Tuesday 9 May.

This is a qualifier for the Inter County 4's which is on Wednesday 7 June at Cochrane Castle Golf Club.  Two best scratch scores and 4 best nett scores will qualify.  In addition the 3 best nett scores will qualify for the Commonwealth Spoons which will be held at Alyth on Monday 11 September.

Have your diaries ready when you check in as you will be asked to confirm your availability!  Unfortunately the Commonwealth Spoons does clash with our meeting at Irvine Golf Club.

West Girls' Medal

Rachel Foster had an excellent net 72 in wet and windy conditions at Troon Portland on Sunday to win the first West of Scotland Girls' Medal of the season.   Katie Ronnie from Barassie won her age group in the Development Medal over the Craigend Course.   Keep up the good form girls!

Scottish Girls' Open Stroke-play Championship

Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) playing in the at Montrose is lying T24 from a very strong filed of competitors, many of them from overseas.   Louise had rounds of 80 and 75 against a CSS of 75 and 73.   14 year old Rachel Foster (Turnberry) left too much to do to make the cut after a disappointing 98 yesterday but bounced back with an 80 today to restore confidence in her game and gain experience for the future.   The top 60 players + ties play the final round on Friday - the cut line was 163 with Louise making the cut to shoot a 79 in the final round to place T39.   Well done girls!

Liz Keohone is ALCGA Champion 2017

Liz Keohone, (Loudoun Gowf Club) is the new Ayrshire Ladies County Champion, winning the title in her year as Captain. It was a great final between Liz and Jane Finnie, Troon Ladies, with Liz winning at the 19th hole.

Jane got off to a great start winning the first 2 holes, the next 4 holes were exchanged before Liz won 8 and 9 to square the match. Liz then chipped in at the 10th to go ahead for the first time in the game. Eleven and 12 were halved in pars before Jane took 3 holes in a row to be 2 up with 3 to play. Sixteen was halved, then a par on 17 was enough for Liz to take the match down 18 where a great chip secured a 4 and a win.

Despite good approach shots to the 19th green neither found the putting surface with Jane running into some trouble at the back of the green. A good up and down from Liz was enough for her to win the hole and the title.

The match was watched by a good crowd who were certainly entertained by the quality of the golf from both finalists in tricky conditions. The better ball score for the 18 holes played being 3 over par.

Well done to everyone who played this week!

Championship Matchplay, Glasgow Gailes GC

Well from my desk it looks pretty windy out there, would still must rather be out on the course watching the ladies play. So if you have some time this afternoon, please go along and show the ladies your support. The final round of Liz Keohone versus Jane Finnie will t-off at 2pm. Good Luck to you both!!

Semi-Final Results:
Liz Keohone beat Pauline Patrick (3&2)
Jane Finnie beat Audrey Thompson (1hole)
