Dear Member

Firstly may I wish you a Happy New Year and good golfing in 2012, I hope that this year will not be as wet and windy as 2011.

I am delighted to have taken over as County Captain and hope that my two years in office will be as successful as the last two years have been, both on and off the golf course.

The County always appreciates your support especially in the current economic climate.  We try to get value for money regarding courses, but as more golf clubs struggle to make ends meet, this becomes more difficult. We are hopeful that the increase in H’cap will encourage more ladies to join – perhaps you could help by encouraging the lady members at your club.

Enclosed with this letter is your “new look” fixture card.  The County mobile phone number is on the back page along with the names and e-mail addresses of the Committee.  If you are unable to attend a fixture on the day of competition through being stuck in traffic or delayed for any reason, please use the County mobile no. to get in touch with whoever is on desk duty. This will save club secretaries or professionals having their busy days interrupted bringing messages to the desk.

Our golf season starts with the County Championships at Troon Ladies Golf Club from Tuesday 10th to Thursday 12th April.  Please have your entries with the secretary either by post or e-mail (secretary@alcga.com) by 1st March.

The Inter-County Match Week will be held at Cardross from Mon. 21st – Wed. 23rd June.  Your support is invaluable both as a spectator or a trolley-puller.  The sight of lots of green jumpers boosts the team’s morale no end.  Sheila Shedden is taking on the job of Caddy Mistress so please volunteer your services, even if you can only manage ½ a day it would be appreciated.  I am hopeful that we can continue the run of good form that saw the team become runners-up in the Scottish County Finals last September.

This year the Curtis Cup is coming to Scotland and will be played at Nairn Golf Club from 8th – 10th June.  Sheila Adams is our “ambassador” and will be happy to give you any information regarding tickets etc.

In the meantime I look forward to seeing you all on the golf course throughout the year and thank you again for your continued support,

Yours

Ayrshire win West Inter County Matches

Ayrshire secured the West Division title by beating Lanarkshire 5 1/2 - 3 1/2 on the third day of the West Division Inter County Match Week. They built on the 2-1 lead from the morning foursomes winning the afternoon singles 3 1/2 to 2 1/2.

Most of the matches were very close. Jenny Linklater secured the first of the afternoon points with an 8&7 win over Emma Caddow. Lesley Hendry who was one up playing the last only managed to secure a halved match after her opponent Fiona Norris sunk her putt for a birdie 3 to win the 18th. This brought the overall total to 3 1/2 and only 1 point was required to ensure a halved match overall and secure the West Division title for Ayrshire. Connie Jaffrey playing in her first Inter County Match week also 1 up coming down the 18th secured the point with a win on the 18th resulting in her beating Susan Wood 2 up. However Ayrshire didn't settle for the half and Catherine Malcolm secured the winning point with a 3&2 win over Lanarkshire captain Lesley Lloyd.

In the other two matches Rachael McQueen lost to Rachael Taylor 3&2 and Alex Glennie lost to Angela Devine 2down.

In the other match between Dunbarton and Argyll and Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire made a comeback from being 3-0 down after the foursomes and won the singles 6-0 resulting in them beating D&A 6-3 overall.

The final placings were
Ayrshire 6 points
Renfrewshire 4 points
Lanarkshire 2 points
Dunbarton and Argyll 0 points.

Ayrshire will now represent the West Division at the county finals to be held at Dumfries and County Golf Club from September 16th -18th.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported the team over the last three days especially the trolley pullers and spectators.

West Division County Match Week Day 2

Ayrshire had another sucessful day on day two of the west division inter county matches. They carried on from their good performance in the morning foursomes to achieve an excellent win over defending champions Renfrewshire 5-4.

The afternoon singles were closely fought with the score sitting at 3-2 in Renfrewshires favour with the last match on the course between Gillian McGinlay and Linzi Allan heading up the 18th all square. Both players missed the green with their second shots. Gillian chipped onto the green from the rough and narrowly missed her putt for a 4. Linzi played an excellent shot from the greenside bunker and sunk her putt for a 4 to win the match and secure the vital point for Ayrshire to draw the singles 3-3 but to win the match 5-4 overall.

The results in the singles were:

Ayrshire Girls Win Kennedy Salver

The Ayrshire Girls Team won through by half a point in the Inter-County Junior Matches for the Kennedy Salver at Erskine on Monday, 13th June. After the morning Foursomes, D & A, Renfrewshire and Ayrshire shared the 6 points at stake with 2 points each. Lanarkshire fought back in the afternoon Singles making 3.5 points from the 6 games, D & A added a further 2, Renfrewshire 3 while Ayrshire made 3.5 which secured the victory. The final totals of Ayrshire 5.5, Renfrewshire 5, D & A 4, Lanarkshire 3.5 is the closest overall result since the format for this event changed in 2007. Erskine was a great venue, despite the cold!, Renfrewshire the perfect hosts, and it was lovely to see all the girls competing in such a friendly manner. Our girls were:- Katie McGarva (captain), Emma Hale, Rachel Irvine, Grace Mackie, Alexandra Brown, and twins Gillian and Sophie Love.

Hazel Shares the Honours

11 year old Hazel McGarvie (Troon Ladies) was joint winner in her age group of the U.S. Kids European Championships recently. 3 rounds are played over one of the Gullane courses in this scratch event. Hazel finished tied with Martha Lewis on 234 so great scoring from both girls. The top two girls from each age group qualify to play in the team event - Western Europe against the Internationals where Hazel and Martha won by 4 & 3 and the team won by 8 points to 5. The photos show Hazel and Martha with the Team Event Trophy, the Van Horn Cup, and Hazel with her Individual prize trophy. Well done Hazel!
